Social Studies
Concepts that will be taught in Kindergarten Social Studies are:
- Tracing the history of individuals and families, and describing the way people lived in earlier days and how we live differently today.
- The people and events honored in national holidays, including Thanksgiving, Presidents’ Day, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
- Identifying days of the week and months of the year. <
- Locating events on a calendar, including birthdays, holidays, and school events.
- Why we have rules and the consequences of breaking them.
- Identifying examples of honesty, courage, cooperation, and patriotism in literature.
- People who help keep us safe in our communities (police, firefighters, nurses, doctors). <
- Symbols of our country: the national and the state flags; the bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.
- Determining the relative location of objects using the terms near/far, behind/in front, over/under.
- Reading and constructing simple maps.
- Be able to make choices, and evaluate the choices of others as consumers, workers, and citizens.
- Examining descriptions of work that people do.
- The need to make choices because resources are limited.
- Recognizing various forms of United States money (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar).
- Understanding how money is used to purchase goods and services.
